Ford’s critically acclaimed 1.0-litre EcoBoost engine has won another prestigious UK award, this time from the Energy Saving Trust (EST), the respected carbon reduction organisation.
At its annual Fleet Hero Awards, Ford won the “Innovation in Car and Van Manufacturing” category. The prize recognises manufacturers that are investing in innovation and new technologies to provide lower carbon vehicle options for fleet operators.
Ian Featherstone, transport knowledge manager at the EST and awards judge, commented: “While alternatives to the internal combustion engine may be the future, existing technologies still have much to offer. Cutting edge, clever engineering like Ford’s EcoBoost has allowed a tiny engine to punch well above its weight and has reopened the debate about the relative merits of petrol and diesel.”
It isn’t the first time Ford has been honoured by the Energy Saving Trust. The company won the same category at the 2009 Fleet Hero Awards for its fuel saving technologies, following the launch of its low-carbon ECOnetic diesel-engined vehicles and the EcoBoost petrol engine range.
This most recent honour is the third for the innovative three-cylinder powerplant. The 1.0-litre EcoBoost engine has been awarded the title of “International Engine of the Year” and in November it was revealed as the winner of the prestigious Dewar Trophy for outstanding British technical achievement in the automotive industry.
During October, the three-cylinder 1.0-litre EcoBoost engine took part in the 2012 ALD Automotive/Shell FuelSave MPG Marathon, this time under the bonnet of a Ford Focus.
Its two-day average fuel consumption figure of 61.93mpg was a near 10 per cent improvement on its official Combined Cycle figure of 56.5mpg. At the same event a Ford Fiesta 1.6 TDCi recorded a remarkable 108.78mpg.
The 1.0-litre EcoBoost engine is now available in the Ford Fiesta, Focus, B-MAX, C-MAX and Grand C-MAX.
