Victory comes as Fiesta’s larger sibling, the new Ford Focus ECOnetic Technology, goes on sale in Europe with 3.4 l/100 km** fuel efficiency and 88 g/km CO2 emissions
Ford’s Fiesta ECOnetic Technology has sealed victory at a respected real-world fuel-efficiency challenge in the UK, recording an average of 2.6 l/100 km during the Fleet World MPG Marathon.
The Fiesta ECOnetic Technology used just 16.22 litres of diesel over the 624 km (388 mile) course on public roads, recording a combined fuel-efficiency figure some 21 percent lower than the vehicle’s official 3.3 l/100 km.
“To improve on an already impressive official fuel economy figure by such a distance really shows what man and machine can do when working together with efficiency in mind,” said Dr. Wolfgang Hennig, Ford of Europe eco-driving expert.
The record result was set during the 2012 ALD Automotive/Shell FuelSave MPG Marathon, organised by UK magazine Fleet World, which took competitors and their vehicles through tricky conditions in south Wales and the Cotswold region of England.
Final results from the event showed Fiesta ECOnetic Technology to be the most fuel-efficient car on the day, returning better consumption than cars including the Toyota Yaris Hybrid, Fiat Panda Multijet Easy, Volkswagen Golf Match Tdi 105 and Kia Rio 1.1 CRDi 1 Eco.
“Eco-driving techniques can massively lower your fuel consumption in any car, but to reach such levels you need a car designed for the job, and Fiesta ECOnetic Technology certainly is,” said Andreas Ostendorf, vice president Sustainability, Environment and Safety Engineering, Ford of Europe.
Fiesta ECOnetic Technology employs a 1.6-litre TDCi diesel engine and uses a range of Ford ECOnetic Technology features to achieve low fuel consumption and CO2 emissions of just 87 g/km. It is Ford of Europe’s most fuel-efficient passenger car ever.
This month, the Fiesta model will be joined by the larger Focus ECOnetic Technology as it goes on sale across Europe. The Focus delivers fuel efficiency of 3.4 l/100 km and CO2 emissions of 88 g/km and features a special catalytic converter called a NOX trap to help reduce CO2 emissions by facilitating a leaner combustion process using a higher proportion of air to fuel, and also adds further ECOnetic Technology innovations.
These include Auto-Start-Stop, Smart Regenerative Charging, Active Grille Shutter, EcoMode, Gear Shift Indicator, bespoke engine calibration and optimised gear ratios with a six-speed transmission. Lower suspension, wheel deflectors and low-rolling resistance tyres reduce friction from air and road, while the Focus ECOnetic Technology also incorporates special aerodynamic underbody shielding to help make it the most fuel-efficient Focus to-date.
