Top 100 SEE highlights
Oil and gas heavyweight OMV Petrom retained its no.1 spot in the ranking for the seventh year in a row, despite a slight drop in revenues to 4.27 billion euro. At the same time, however, its net profit rose to 1.08 billion euro – the highest among the top 100 companies in Southeast Europe (SEE).
Oil and gas companies continued to dominate the rankings and generate the bulk of the total revenue but both their combined revenues and profit fell. The sector has 29 representatives in the ranking, one more than a year earlier.
The number of electricity companies in the ranking too increased by one from a year earlier, to 19. Wholesalers and retailers numbered 17, three more than a year earlier. The number of telcos in the ranking dropped to seven. Banca Comerciala Romana, a member of Erste Group, topped the list of the biggest banks in the region for the fourth year in a row. More than a third of the banks in the ranking saw their assets decline.
With the European Union economies still struggling to rebound from the crisis, their SEE counterparts fared better in 2013 than they did a year earlier but economic growth in most countries in the region underwhelmed, Romania being one of the few exceptions. At the same time, long overdue structural reforms, fiscal and regulatory volatility and poor infrastructure continued to be a drag on businesses in the region. Against this backdrop, the performance of the companies in the SEE TOP 100 ranking was expectedly lackluster.
The combined revenues of the Top 100 non-financial companies in SEE for 2013 were largely unchanged at 103.98 billion euro versus 103.6 billion euro reported by the entrants in the 2012 ranking. Their net profit, however, totalled 2.63 billion euro, compared to 2.85 billion euro posted by the companies included in the 2012 SEE TOP 100 ranking.
The full content of SeeNews TOP 100 SEE is available on Business Review website //business-review.eu/ or on www.top100.seenews.com and will be distributed on a VIP exclusive base to all top-management of companies present in the SEE TOP, BR subscribers and a selected list of companies active on the Romanian market.
Romania in SeeNews TOP 100 SEE
Romania expanded its domination of the SEE TOP 100 ranking placing 53 companies on the 2013 list versus 51 a year earlier. Romanian companies firmed their positions in the ranking of the most profitable companies in SEE, as well, taking four of the top five places. However, the country had the highest number of representatives in the ranking of the biggest losers, as well.
Romania had 22 entries in the TOP 100 Banks ranking. Despite a 10% drop in assets to 14.16 billion euro, Banca Comerciala Romana, a unit of Austria’s Erste, topped the ranking for the fourth year in a row. The largest net profit among SEE banks in 2013, of 107.7 million euro, was again posted by a Romania-based bank, the local unit of Austria’s Raiffeisen.
Romania was also the market with the biggest presence in the SEE TOP 100 Insurers ranking with 21 entrants, one less compared to the previous year. Its highest-ranked insurer was Astra SA, at number six, followed by Allianz – Tiriac Asigurari SA, Omniasig Vienna Insurance Group SA (formerly BCR Asigurari VIG) and Groupama Asigurari SA at the seventh, eighth and ninth place, respectively.
